Discovering Passo Pordoi

Passo Pordoi (Pordoijoch in German, Jouf de Pordoi in Ladin) is a famous alpine pass in the Dolomites, located at 2,239 meters above sea level on the border between Veneto and Trentino-Alto Adige. The pass lies between the Sella Group to the north and the Marmolada Group to the south, connecting Arabba (a hamlet of Livinallongo del Col di Lana, Belluno province) with Canazei, a town in the Val di Fassa in Trento province. On the descent to Canazei, after 6.5 km, you can turn right to climb 5.5 km to reach Passo Sella and continue to the Val Gardena.

The famous hiking trail, Alta Via No. 2, which crosses the Dolomites from Bressanone to Feltre, passes through Passo Pordoi, making it a key starting point for trekking and mountain adventures.

From Passo Pordoi, you can quickly reach the Sella Group via the cable car built by Hölzl, which climbs in one leap to 2,950 m at Sass Pordoi, the southernmost spur of the group. Here lies the summit of Piz Boè (3,152 m), the highest peak of the Sella Group.

Several routes start from Passo Pordoi, including the beautiful and panoramic Viel del Pan, a trekking path offering spectacular views of the Dolomites and surrounding valleys.

On the Veneto side of the pass, there is an ossuary holding the remains of soldiers from the Great War: 454 German and 8,582 Austro-Hungarian soldiers from various war cemeteries. The outer terraces also contain the remains of 849 German Wehrmacht soldiers from World War II, coming from cemeteries in the Belluno area.

Passo Pordoi is a must-visit for lovers of cycling, thanks to the famous Sellaronda bike tour, and for fans of ski mountaineering and alpine skiing, being directly connected to the renowned Skiarea Arabba and Val di Fassa. The slopes, suitable for all skill levels, offer breathtaking views of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage site, making Passo Pordoi an ideal year-round destination for an active mountain holiday.
