Discovering Forcella Spè

In the heart of the Belluno Dolomites, within the mountainous territory of Pieve di Cadore, lies the wild and captivating Forcella Spe, situated at approximately 2,200 meters above sea level. This alpine pass connects the slopes of Monte Cridola with the upper Val Cimoliana, offering a hiking experience immersed in the most authentic nature, far from tourist routes.

The pass is crossed by the Alta Via No. 6 – Alta Via dei Silenzi, one of the most scenic long-distance trails in the Eastern Dolomites. The section that passes through Forcella Spe is recommended for experienced hikers, due to unstable scree slopes, steep inclines, and exposed passages, but it rewards with spectacular views of the Cridola, Spalti di Toro, Monfalconi, and Duranno–Cima dei Preti mountain groups.

From a geological perspective, the area is dominated by Triassic dolomite and sedimentary layers that tell a story spanning millions of years of Earth’s history. The environment is rich in alpine biodiversity, featuring rare blooms and wildlife adapted to the extreme conditions of high altitude.

Although not directly involved in the museumized routes of the Great War, Forcella Spe holds strong cultural significance as a place of passage and observation, used by shepherds, travelers, and mountaineers since ancient times. Today, it stands as an ideal destination for those seeking challenging treks, untouched nature, and authentic Dolomite landscapes.
