Discovering Forni di Sotto

Forni di Sotto, the green heart of Carnia and the largest municipality in the region with its 93 km², lies at 777 meters above sea level in the upper Tagliamento Valley, where the river flows between the Dolomite peaks of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park. Ancient Celtic-Gallic findings and the fortified site of Pra di Got tell of millennia of history, now highlighted along the Cammino delle Pievi, a pilgrimage route that includes the Matrice Pieve of Carnia.

The village preserves a network of historic fountains—featured in the open-air museum trail “Le Vie dell’Acqua”—and stone houses with larch balconies. Towering above are the peaks of Monte Pramaggiore (2,478 m) and Monte Bìvera (2,474 m), iconic destinations for hikers and photographers. Well-marked trails lead to the wild Tagliamento Canyons. For cyclists, the FVG 6 cycle route offers relaxing stages through spruce forests and flowering clearings.

The spiritual symbol of the village is the Church of San Lorenzo (14th century, later renovated), home to late Gothic frescoes and a fine wooden altar. In summer, the village comes alive with festivals like “Piccoli Palchi” and the Anciuti Music Festival, while autumn brings the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary, filled with the aromas of frico, cjarsòns, and alpine herb desserts.

Forni di Sotto is the ideal destination for those seeking scenic trekking, sustainable outdoor holidays, and the genuine hospitality of the Carnic Alps.
