Discovering Forcella Piccola

Forcella Piccola, nestled in the heart of the Cadore Dolomites, is one of the most scenic hiking destinations in the province of Belluno, ideal for those seeking breathtaking views, peaceful solitude, and an authentic connection with the mountains. Located at approximately 2,120 meters above sea level, this mountain pass links the slopes of San Vito di Cadore with the upper valley of the Ru Secco, offering privileged views of the majestic Mount Antelao (3,264 m), the second-highest peak in the Dolomites, and the dramatic cliffs of the Marmarole Group.

The trail to Forcella Piccola begins at the Rifugio Scotter–Palatini, easily accessible from San Vito, and winds through larch forests, alpine meadows, and wild scree slopes. The well-marked CAI Trail No. 229 crosses pristine environments and reveals stunning vistas of peaks such as Cima Bel Pra, Cima Salvella, and the iconic Monte Pelmo, visible beyond the Boite Valley. While the area is popular among experienced hikers, it also offers sections suitable for those who prefer a slower, more mindful approach to mountain exploration.

From a naturalistic perspective, Forcella Piccola is a true panoramic balcony over the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites, featuring alpine flora, dolomitic rock formations, and rich biodiversity in every season. In summer, it’s a paradise for trekking and landscape photography; in winter, it becomes a reference point for snowshoeing and ski mountaineering.
