Discovering Limides Lake
Lake Limides – nestled among the majestic Ampezzo Dolomites at an altitude of 2,181 meters – is one of the most enchanting and photographed alpine lakes in the Dolomite range. Located near Passo Falzarego, within the territory of Cortina d'Ampezzo, this glacial lake offers stunning reflections of the surrounding peaks: Tofana di Rozes, Lagazuoi, Averau, and Sass de Stria all mirror in its crystal-clear waters, creating postcard-worthy scenery.
The hike to Lake Limides is among the most accessible and beloved in the area. Trail CAI 419 starts from Rifugio Col Gallina and, with a vertical gain of about 130 meters, leads to the lake in less than an hour. The path winds through alpine forests and meadows, making it suitable for families with children and offering breathtaking panoramic views. In spring and early summer, the lake is fed by melting snow, while in autumn it glows with warm hues thanks to the vibrant foliage.
The area also holds deep historical significance: during World War I, nearby Passo Falzarego was the site of intense battles, and remnants of trenches and fortifications can still be seen along the trails.
According to local legend, those who gaze into the lake’s waters with a pure heart may catch a glimpse of the anguana – a water nymph of the Dolomites. This fairy-tale touch adds a layer of magic to the experience.
