Discovering Passo Valparola

The Valparola Pass (2,192 m), also known as Jù de Valparola in Ladin and Valparolapass in German, is one of the most scenic spots in the Belluno Dolomites, located just 1.2 km north of the Falzarego Pass. This alpine pass connects the Val Badia with Livinallongo, and through Falzarego, with the iconic Ampezzo Valley.

At the summit, you’ll find the picturesque Rifugio Valparola and a small alpine lake, the Lake Valparola, mirroring majestic peaks like Lagazuoi, Sass de Stria, Settsass, and Col di Lana. From here, the view over the Northern Dolomites—one of the nine official systems protected by the Dolomites UNESCO Foundation—is simply breathtaking.

The Valparola Pass also holds deep historical significance. Once a border zone between Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire during World War I, it is home to Forte Tre Sassi, now a rich and moving Museum of the Great War. Nearby lies the Edelweiss Stellung, part of the Yellow Line, the former front line stretching from the Marmolada to Lagazuoi.

Beloved by hikers and especially cycling enthusiasts, the pass can be climbed from three different sides: from La Villa (14 km at 5.4%), from Cortina via Falzarego (17 km at 6%), and from Caprile (20 km at 6%). Each ascent offers unforgettable views and an immersion in pristine alpine nature.
