Discovering Wurmtalerjöchl

Located at 2,738 meters above sea level in the Zillertal Alps, the Wurmtalerjöchl is a spectacular mountain pass connecting the Ahrntal Valley with the Pfitsch Valley, in the heart of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park. This panoramic saddle is a key stop along the Pfunderer Höhenweg, one of South Tyrol’s wildest and most authentic high-altitude trekking routes.

The hike to Wurmtalerjöchl is recommended for experienced trekkers, with sections over glacial scree, rocky slopes, and high-mountain trails, and an elevation gain that can exceed 1,200 meters. The route offers breathtaking views of peaks such as the Großer Möseler (3,480 m), Monte Lovello, and Sasso Nero, and passes through pristine alpine environments where hikers may spot ibexes, golden eagles, and a resilient high-mountain flora thriving among rocks and snowfields.

Culturally, the area is deeply rooted in Tyrolean traditions, reflected in the stone-and-wood mountain huts, local cuisine, and stories passed down by mountain communities. The nearby Rifugio Ponte di Ghiaccio, a model of sustainable alpine architecture, offers authentic hospitality and traditional dishes such as canederli, speck, and alpine cheeses, making the hike a truly multisensory experience.
