Discovering Mühlbach

Rio di Pusteria, gateway to the Puster Valley in South Tyrol, is a charming village rich in history and natural beauty, ideal for a holiday in the Dolomites filled with culture, sport, and relaxation. Located at 777 meters above sea level, the village is known for its medieval heritage and serves as the central hub of the Gitschberg Jochtal Ski & Alpine Pasture Holiday Area, which includes renowned destinations such as Maranza, Valles, Spinga, and Rodengo.

The village’s landmark is the historic Rio di Pusteria Fortress, a medieval customs station that once marked the border between Tyrol and the County of Gorizia. Today, it can be visited with guided tours and is part of the scenic Historical and Cultural Trail, which winds through the village center and reveals its past through informative panels and installations.

In winter, Rio di Pusteria is the perfect starting point for accessing the Gitschberg Jochtal ski resort, offering over 55 km of slopes, snow parks, and panoramic mountain huts. In summer, the area transforms into a hiking paradise, with more than 30 alpine pastures accessible on foot, mountain biking trails, Nordic walking routes, and breathtaking views of the Dolomites.

The Parish Church of Saint Helena, with its alpine architecture and historic fountain, is one of the most photographed spots in the village. Rio di Pusteria hosts cultural events, farmers’ markets, and traditional festivals that celebrate South Tyrolean heritage.
