Discovering Rislahner-Scharte

The Rislahner-Scharte, located at 2,139 m between the Keilbach Valley and the Frankbach Valley, is one of the most authentic and lesser-known hiking destinations in South Tyrol’s Ahrntal Valley – Valle Aurina, nestled in the heart of the Zillertal Alps. This alpine pass, accessible from St. Johann im Ahrntal, offers a deep immersion into untouched nature, alpine silence, and spectacular mountain scenery.

The most popular route follows trail no. 18, which climbs along the Frankenbach stream, passing the rustic Bizathütte and Holzerbödenhütte mountain huts. The final stretch, known as the Schmugglerweg (Smugglers’ Trail), winds through alpine meadows and stone pine forests, leading to a panoramic bench at the saddle with stunning views of the Durreck Group, the Großer Löffler, and surrounding peaks over 3,000 m.

The Rislahner-Scharte is ideal for experienced hikers due to its steep and rocky terrain, but also appeals to nature lovers seeking wildlife sightings, summer blooms, and autumn colors. Though not equipped with fixed cables, the trail requires good fitness and proper hiking boots.

Set within the natural and cultural landscape of the Tures and Ahrntal Valleys, the Rislahner-Scharte is a must-see for those eager to explore the wilder, more authentic side of the South Tyrolean Dolomites.
