Discovering Heilig-Geist-Jöchl

On the border between South Tyrol and the Austrian Tyrol, the Heilig-Geist-Jöchl is a panoramic mountain pass at 2,662 m overlooking the upper Ahrntal Valley and the glacial ridges along the frontier. The most popular access route starts from Casere (Kasern), the last village in the valley, where the road ends and the trails of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park begin. From here, the route follows trail no. 15 through forests, alpine pastures, and the Wieser Werfa biotope, up to the pass with its sweeping views of the Venediger Group.

The hike, starting behind the Berghotel in Kasern, takes about three hours of ascent and crosses pristine alpine environments. Possible variants include the Waldner See, Waldner Alm, Schüttalalm, and Tauernalm (trails 15, 15a, 16b, 15b, 14, and 13), allowing the itinerary to be adapted to different experience levels.

The cultural dimension is part of the experience: just a short walk from the valley floor stands the Sanctuary of the Holy Spirit in Casere, an ancient chapel of the miners of Predoi and a pilgrimage site linked by a Way of the Cross. For centuries it offered protection to travellers and pilgrims heading toward the Pinzgau via the alpine passes; today it is the symbol of Casere and its high‑mountain landscape.
