Discovering Jenesien

Just 10 km from Bolzano, perched on a sunny plateau at 1,100 meters above sea level, lies San Genesio Atesino, a charming South Tyrolean village surrounded by centuries-old larch forests, traditional farmsteads, and Dolomite views. Easily accessible by car or via the panoramic cable car (currently under reconstruction), it’s known as the “panoramic balcony over Bolzano” for its sweeping vistas of the valley and surrounding peaks.

San Genesio is famous as the home of the Haflinger horses, featured in riding tours and local equestrian events. The area offers over 300 km of hiking trails, including routes across the Salto (Tschögglberg)—Europe’s largest larch plateau—and paths leading to the Stoanerne Mandln (Stone Men), mysterious rock formations steeped in Alpine legend.

Popular hikes include the Woodcutter’s Trail, the route to the Steifler Biotope, and the European Long-Distance Trail E5, which crosses the region to the panoramic viewpoint of Lavena. In winter, the Salto becomes a haven for snowshoeing and cross-country skiing, while summer invites trekking, mountain biking, and birdwatching.

The village preserves a strong connection to South Tyrolean farming culture, visible in its historic farms, 15th-century churches, and seasonal festivals. San Genesio is perfect for those seeking slow travel, unspoiled nature, and authentic Alpine charm, just minutes from the city yet worlds away in atmosphere.
