Discovering Bronzolo

Bronzolo lies at 238 m a.s.l. on the left bank of the Adige River, 13 km from Bolzano, and has around 2 800 inhabitants. The toponym, recorded as early as 1181 as Branzol, derives from the Germanic name Berinza and recalls the ancient river port where, since Roman times, timber and goods were transloaded along the waterway. Today Bronzolo is a premier stop on the South Tyrol Wine Road, with vineyards of Cabernet, Merlot, Lagrein, and Schiava flourishing on the characteristic sandy-gravel soils of the Lower Adige Valley.

The village’s heart is Piazza San Leonardo, dominated by the Romanesque-late Gothic church and embellished by fountains and historic residences such as Palazzo von Ferrari-Thomsen and the 18th-century former customs house. Outdoor enthusiasts can follow the Lower Adige Cycle Path, which links Bronzolo to Bolzano and Laives through rows of apple orchards, or venture along the Old Aldino Path (Vecchio Sentiero di Aldino) and the Monte San Pietro woodland trails in search of the rare fire salamander known locally as “Tottermandl.”

Typical events include the Feierabend Bierpudl in late August, the annual autumn market, and the Saint Roch Patronal Feast on August 16, when the village comes alive with stalls, Tyrolean music, and local specialties. Thanks to its railway station served by regional trains, Bronzolo makes an ideal base for wine and food tours, scenic hikes, and the exploration of South Tyrolean culture in the very heart of South Tyrol.
