Discovering Smarano

In the heart of the Predaia Plateau, at around 1,000 meters above sea level, lies Smarano, a hamlet of the municipality of Predaia, surrounded by conifer forests, apple orchards, and alpine meadows. With Roman origins and sweeping views over the Val di Non, the Maddalene mountain group, and the Brenta Dolomites, Smarano offers a perfect blend of nature, culture, and tradition—ideal for a slow travel experience in Trentino.

Smarano is a starting point for hikes along the 12 Anaunia Trails, which follow ancient rural paths and connect the village to iconic sites such as Castel Thun, La Rocchetta, and Mount Roen. These scenic routes are suitable for families, hikers, and cyclists, offering both natural and cultural highlights.

The village is known for its artistic and craft heritage, with active sculptors, painters, restorers, and wood and iron artisans keeping local traditions alive. A key landmark is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, documented since 1280 and rebuilt in Baroque and Renaissance style. Inside, it houses a valuable mechanical-action organ built in 1993 by Ghilardi, ideal for Renaissance and Baroque music.

Smarano also hosts the International Academy for Organ and Harpsichord Improvisation, a prestigious summer event that attracts musicians from across Europe, organized by the Mons. Celestino Eccher Association.
