Discovering Lago di Vernago

Vernago Lake, located at 1,689 meters above sea level in the heart of Val Senales in South Tyrol, is a striking artificial lake nestled among larch forests and alpine peaks. Created in the 1950s with the construction of a dam on the Senales River, the lake submerged part of the old village of Vernago, including a 17th-century church whose bell tower occasionally emerges from the water, offering enchanting and memory-laden views.

A 7-kilometer circular hiking trail winds around the lake, suitable for all levels, crossing suspension bridges, waterfalls, and breathtaking viewpoints. The route is ideal for families, trekking enthusiasts, and nature photographers. From here, more challenging trails lead to the Similaun Refuge and the Similaun Glacier, where the famous Ötzi mummy was discovered in 1991, making the area a landmark for alpine archaeology lovers.

The lake is open to canoeing and offers sport fishing opportunities (with a license), thanks to its population of trout and pike. Nearby, the Ötzi Rope Park provides a nature-based adventure experience. In September, the village hosts the Transhumance Festival, a traditional event celebrating the return of flocks from summer pastures, recognized as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage.
