Discovering Plaus

Plaus, a charming village in the Val Venosta in the province of Bolzano, is an ideal destination for those seeking peace, nature, and culture in the heart of South Tyrol. Located at around 500 meters above sea level, between Naturno and Merano, Plaus has fewer than 700 residents and offers an intimate, relaxing atmosphere - perfect for slow and restorative tourism.

The village is crossed by the scenic Val Venosta Cycle Path, which runs from the Resia Pass to Merano along the Adige River, offering breathtaking views of apple orchards, vineyards, and mountains. In spring, the blooming apple trees turn Plaus into a natural masterpiece, while in summer and autumn, hiking trails lead to Monte Tramontana, the Knight’s Trail, and the Monte Sole Panorama Trail, through deciduous forests and steppe-like vegetation.

Culturally, Plaus surprises with two adjacent churches: the historic Church of Saint Ulrich, featuring a Romanesque bell tower from the 12th century and a Gothic structure from the 1400s, and the modern Church of Saint Monica, a fine example of contemporary architecture. Not to be missed is the Plauser Totentanz, a cycle of 18 frescoes painted in 2001 by Luis Stefan Stecher on the cemetery wall, reflecting on life and death with phrases in the local Venostan dialect.

Thanks to its mild climate, strategic location, and rich natural and cultural offerings, Plaus is a perfect year-round destination.
