Discovering Sanzeno

Sanzeno, a small village in the heart of Val di Non, is one of the oldest settlements in the Trentino region. Its origins date back to ancient times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological finds now preserved in the remarkable Retic Museum. This museum offers a fascinating journey through time, telling the story of the Rhaetians, a pre-Roman people who once lived here, and later the Romans who colonized the area.

Sanzeno is above all a place of spirituality: in the 4th century, the three missionaries Sisinio, Martirio, and Alessandro arrived here to evangelize the locals. They were martyred, and in their honor, the Basilica of the Holy Martyrs was built—one of the most important religious landmarks in Trentino. Today, Sanzeno remains a destination for pilgrimages, especially to the renowned San Romedio Sanctuary, reached via a dramatic rock-carved path. The sanctuary, set in a stunning natural landscape, is part of the interregional project “Sentieri del Cielo – Romanesque Route of the Alps”.

Walking through Sanzeno is like strolling through an open-air museum. Its streets are lined with historic noble houses, such as Casa de’ Gentili, a beautiful example of Trentino aristocratic architecture. Not far away is the village of Casez, with its castle and historic buildings.

Sanzeno also offers a beautiful natural landscape: surrounded by apple orchards and a harmonious countryside, there are many hiking trails leading to Lake Santa Giustina, accessible from the hamlet of Banco. A perfect mix of faith, history, and nature.
