Discovering Neumarkt

Located in the Lower Adige Valley, just a few kilometers from Bolzano, Egna (Neumarkt in German) captivates visitors with its medieval old town, renowned for its long Gothic arcades from the 14th century, among the most beautiful and best preserved in South Tyrol. The “hall houses,” inner courtyards, and frescoed facades tell the story of a village that was already a major commercial center in the Middle Ages, thanks to its strategic position along the Via Claudia Augusta.

Egna is nestled in a landscape of vineyards and orchards, the beating heart of South Tyrolean viticulture. This is where one of Italy’s most prestigious Pinot Noir wines is produced, especially in the area of Mazzon, a hamlet of the municipality.

Among the cultural highlights is the Klösterle of Laghetti, one of the few intact medieval hospices for pilgrims still standing in Europe. Built in the 13th century, it now hosts cultural events, concerts, and exhibitions, and is a stop along the scenic Dürer Path. Also not to be missed is the Museum of Popular Culture, which preserves objects and testimonies of everyday life in historic South Tyrol.

Egna is lively throughout the year with cultural and traditional events, such as the weekly market under the arcades, theater festivals, and the patron saint celebration of San Nicolò in December. The village is also an ideal starting point for exploring nearby destinations like Termeno, Caldaro, and Monticolo Lake.
