Discovering Grumes

Nestled in the heart of Val di Cembra, at an altitude of 850 meters, lies Grumes, a hamlet of the municipality of Altavalle (TN). Surrounded by terraced vineyards, ancient forests and the wild waters of the Avisio River, Grumes is home to around 400 residents and is the smallest member worldwide of the Cittaslow international network—championing “slow living” and sustainable tourism.

The village is a gateway to numerous nature trails within the Alta Val di Cembra–Avisio Nature Reserve Network, including the scenic Giro dei Masi di Grumes, which passes through medieval Germanic-style farmsteads, and the Sentiero dei Vecchi Mestieri (Path of Ancient Trades), linking historic mills, sawmills and blacksmiths along the Rio dei Molini. Also worth exploring is the Botanical Trail on the Dossone di Cembra, featuring educational panels and a barefoot sensory path.

At the heart of the village is the Green Grill – Info and Flavours, a visitor center and showcase for local products: Müller Thurgau wine, alpine cheeses, cured meats, herbal teas, honey and natural cosmetics—all sourced from small, sustainable farms. Built entirely from local wood, the center is a model of green architecture and environmental education.

Grumes also hosts the annual Cittaslow Weekend, a three-day celebration of slow living with markets, workshops, concerts and tastings. Just a few kilometers away lies Lago Santo, a peaceful hiking destination steeped in local legends and accessible via the ancient Via Claudia Augusta.
