Discovering Lake Kaltern

Lake Caldaro, nestled among vineyards and gentle hills along the South Tyrolean Wine Road, is the warmest natural bathing lake in the Alps, thanks to its shallow depth and mild climate. Located just a few kilometers south of Bolzano, it’s a top destination for those seeking relaxation, outdoor sports, and nature. In summer, its waters are perfect for swimming, sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, and pedalo rides, with popular bathing spots like the Lido and Gretl am See.

The southern shore hosts a protected wetland biotope, part of the Natura 2000 network, ideal for nature walks and birdwatching. Hiking trails lead to scenic spots such as the Rastenbach Gorge, the Ice Holes in Appiano, and the panoramic ruins of Castelchiaro (Leuchtenburg). From the village of Kaltern am See, visitors can board the historic Mendola Funicular, one of the steepest in Europe, which climbs to the Mount Roen ridge for breathtaking views over the Dolomites and the Adige Valley.

Kaltern am See is renowned for its wine-growing tradition, with the South Tyrolean Wine Museum and numerous wineries open year-round. In spring, the nearby Spring Valley bursts into bloom, offering colorful walks and a preview of summer’s warmth.

Lake Caldaro is a perfect destination for active and sustainable tourism, where culture, landscape, and gastronomy come together in one of South Tyrol’s most authentic settings.
