Discovering Lago di Santa Massenza

Lake Santa Massenza, located in the village of Santa Massenza, part of the municipality of Vallelaghi, is a small glacial lake connected to Lake Toblino via a scenic canal that runs beneath the Gardesana road. Its waters feed the impressive Santa Massenza Hydroelectric Power Plant, carved 600 meters deep into the rock and open to visitors through the Hydrotour Dolomiti experience.

The village is renowned as the Trentino capital of artisanal grappa: despite having only around 150 residents, it hosts five historic family-run distilleries that carry on centuries-old traditions. Every December, Santa Massenza celebrates “La Notte degli Alambicchi Accesi” (“The Night of the Lit Stills”), a theatrical and sensory journey through the distilleries, featuring tastings, storytelling, and cultural performances.

A themed walking trail surrounds the lake, suitable for all ages, with educational panels, panoramic viewpoints, and direct access to the historic center. Cultural highlights include the Palazzo Sizzo de Noris, with its Baroque details, and the legend of Massenza, mother of Saint Vigilius, who is said to have lived in this very place.

Thanks to its mild microclimate, Santa Massenza is also known for its olive oil, Torbole broccoli, black truffle, and Nosiola wine, making it a perfect destination for lovers of slow tourism, Trentino gastronomy, and nature-based holidays.
