Discovering Besenello

Besenello stands on the left bank of the Adige River in a natural amphitheater between Trento and Rovereto, in the heart of the Vallagarina. Overlooking the village is Castel Beseno, the largest fortress in Trentino, restored for performances and medieval reenactments.

The area is cultivated with vineyards and orchards typical of its temperate climate. The Ciclabile Bassa Vallagarina cycle path runs along the river through lush greenery, while the Sentiero dell’Imperatore—an ancient military route—connects Acquaviva to the Church of the Holy Trinity, winding through forests and the scenic gorges of Rio Cavallo.

In the historic center stands the parish church of Sant’Agata, built in the 13th century, alongside charming examples of rural Trentino architecture. History enthusiasts can visit the Garibaldi Museum, dedicated to the Risorgimento campaigns, and explore the castle’s halls lined with medieval arms.

Besenello is a challenge for cycling lovers: the paved ascent of Scanuppia, famous for gradients up to 43%—one of the steepest in Europe—and Monte Spizom, offering hikes past mountain huts and stands of Norway spruce.

Local life comes alive with the Palio delle Contrade each June at the castle, the weekly market every Monday, and the patronal feast of Sant’Agata on February 5.

Thanks to the A22 motorway and Besenello railway station, the village is the ideal base for exploring the nature, culture, sports, and enogastronomy of the Vallagarina.
