Discovering Lago di Valle

Lake Valle, located in the municipality of Fornace at 625 meters above sea level, is a small lake of glacial and alluvial origin, also known as “Lake Castelet” or “Lake Fornace.” Covering an area of approximately 0.018 km² with a maximum depth of 9 meters, it is a true treasure trove of biodiversity in Trentino-Alto Adige/South Tyrol, ideal for nature walks, birdwatching, and recreational fishing.

Fed by three streams — the Rio Saro, Rio Santo Stefano, and Rio Arfontane — the lake serves as an ecological corridor for numerous animal species. Its southern shore is lined with reeds that provide habitat for aquatic birds such as mallard, coot, great crested grebe, grey heron, and moorhen. The waters host fish species including pike, eel, and tench, making it a popular spot for anglers.

In the early 2000s, the lake experienced significant environmental degradation due to porphyry quarrying and the impact of the SP71 provincial road. However, thanks to ecological restoration efforts promoted by the Autonomous Province of Trento and the Municipality of Fornace, a renaturalization project was launched to improve water quality and restore the original habitat.

Today, Lake Valle is part of the Natura 2000 Network conservation strategy, with targeted actions aimed at protecting wildlife and raising environmental awareness.
