Discovering Grauno

Nestled among forests and terraced vineyards in the scenic Val di Cembra, the village of Grauno, part of the municipality of Altavalle in the province of Trento, is a hidden gem that preserves the charm of authentic mountain life. With just over 150 residents, Grauno enchants visitors with its stone houses, flowered balconies, and quiet alleys that reflect the soul of the Trentino Alps.

Grauno is best known for its archaic Carnival, one of the oldest and most evocative in Trentino. Each year, locals drag a large pine tree through the village and burn it in the “Busa del Carneval,” a symbolic ritual rooted in pre-Christian traditions that celebrates the transition from winter to spring. The event includes open-air performances, music, dancing, and traditional food, offering a truly immersive cultural experience.

The village is also a starting point for hiking and MTB trails leading to the Monte Corno Nature Park, the Botanical Trail to Capriana, and the Sentiero dei Mestieri (“Craftsmen’s Trail”), which showcases ancient local trades. Nearby, visitors can explore the restored Molino di Grauno and enjoy breathtaking views over the valley, surrounded by spruce forests and vineyards.
