Discovering Sfruz

Sfruz is a typical alpine village and one of the highest in the Val di Non, located on a sunny plateau between Mount Roen and the Corno di Tres. Its ancient origins are proven by archaeological finds of Roman tombs, evidence of a long and fascinating history.

The village has preserved its original structure, with rural houses and noble buildings featuring stone portals, wooden balconies and frescoes. Walking along Via Predaia, visitors can admire details of local architecture, such as a portal from 1704 with a family crest, a pointed arch, and, at the top of the street, a bas-relief of Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners. The Parish Church of Saint Agatha is also worth a visit.

Sfruz is famous for its mountain potatoes and for its traditional craftsmanship, including woodworking, goldsmithing, and especially the production of the ceramic stoves (“olle”), made here since the Renaissance and once exported to Austria, South Tyrol and Lombardy.

Nature lovers can enjoy the 12 “Anaunia Trails”, a network of old routes connecting Rocchetta to Castel Thun, winding through forests of fir and beech trees and passing by Sfruz and Smarano — a wonderful way to explore the landscapes and authentic traditions of the Val di Non.
