Discovering Calliano

Calliano, an ancient village in Trentino, is located where the Rio Cavallo flows into the Adige River, halfway between Trento and Rovereto. Its strategic position, at the crossroads leading to the Brenner Pass and the Plateaus of Folgaria, Lavarone and Luserna, made it a key point over the centuries, defended by two imposing fortresses: Castel Beseno and Castel Pietra.

Once the scene of fierce battles – including the famous Battle of Calliano in 1487, still reenacted during the summer months – today Calliano is a peaceful destination for cultural and food tourism, loved for its landscapes, history and local products.

Castel Beseno, the largest fortified complex in Trentino, dominates the Vallagarina Valley with breathtaking views. Castel Pietra, built on a rocky spur formed by a landslide, houses treasures such as the Hall of Judgment, the Hanging Tower, and the ancient prisons.

In Calliano’s historic center, highlights include the Church of San Lorenzo, the chapel of Saints Sebastian and Fabian, and several historic palaces that tell the story of local nobility and culture. From here, scenic walks lead through vineyards and panoramic views, including the Art Route, a cultural itinerary connecting Calliano, Volano and Besenello, dotted with artworks and historical landmarks.

Calliano is also a land of excellent Trentino wines, with many wineries to visit. For sports enthusiasts, an 18 km cycling climb starts here towards the plateaus, and nearby an equestrian center offers riding lessons and activities.
