Discovering Niederjoch

Niederjoch, also known as Basso Giogo, is a scenic alpine pass located at 3,012 meters above sea level in the Ötztal Alps, on the border between South Tyrol and Tyrol (Austria). This panoramic crossing connects the Schnalstal (Val Senales) with the Ötztal valley and is a must-visit destination for experienced hikers and mountain lovers.

The area is renowned for the Similaun Hut, a strategic stop along the Ötztal Trek and the European long-distance trail E5, two of the most spectacular hiking routes in the Alps. Near the hut lies the archaeological site where Ötzi, the famous Similaun mummy, was discovered—adding historical and cultural significance to the location.

Hiking routes to Niederjoch start from villages like Mazia, Planol, and Vernago, with challenging trails that climb over 1,000 meters in elevation and offer breathtaking views of glaciers and peaks such as Fineilspitze and Similaun. Popular routes include Mazia–Piz Lun–Basso Giogo, Giogo Alto–Piz Lun via Mazia, and the Vent–Similaun Hut–Ötzi site traverse, all rated medium to high difficulty.

Niederjoch is the perfect destination for those seeking high-altitude trekking, cultural exploration, and untouched alpine landscapes. In summer, the pass offers a pristine mountain environment ideal for day hikes or long-distance trekking stages. In winter, it remains less frequented but retains its wild charm.
