Discovering Lago di Resia

Located at an altitude of 1,498 meters in the municipality of Curon Venosta, South Tyrol, Lake Resia is one of the most iconic destinations in the Dolomites and the entire Val Venosta. Covering an area of 6.6 km², it is the largest lake in the province of Bolzano and is renowned for its striking sunken Romanesque bell tower, a one-of-a-kind landmark that emerges from the water—a silent witness to the submerged village of Curon, lost in 1950 during the construction of a hydroelectric dam.

Surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery, the lake offers ideal conditions for hiking, panoramic treks, cycling, and water sports such as kitesurfing, sailing, canoeing, and kayaking. In winter, when the lake freezes, it becomes the stage for snowkiting, ice skating, and cross-country skiing, delivering magical experiences in a fairytale-like setting.

Culturally, Lake Resia is steeped in local legends, including tales of phantom bells that are said to ring during winter nights. The Alta Val Venosta Museum in Curon shares the story of the submerged town and the resilience of the local communities.

The lake also hosts the annual Lake Resia Run, a 15.3 km summer race that draws athletes from across Europe. The Via Claudia Augusta, a historic Roman road, passes through the area, making it perfect for active holidays and slow tourism experiences.
