Discovering San Martino in Passiria

Located just 16 km north of Merano, St. Martin in Passeier is the largest and most populated village in the Passeier Valley, nestled within the scenic Texelgruppe Nature Park. At 597 m a.s.l., this South Tyrolean gem offers a harmonious blend of Alpine nature, Tyrolean culture, and authentic hospitality.

The village is named after the Parish Church of St. Martin, dating back to the 12th century, which features Baroque frescoes and altars created by the renowned Passeier Valley Painting School (1719–1845), including works by Nikolaus and Benedikt Auer. Many façades in the historic center are adorned with original frescoes, turning the village into an open-air gallery.

St. Martin is a strategic starting point for hikes of all levels: the Merano High Route (Alta Via di Merano), the Passer Gorge Trail, the Schildhof Trail, and paths leading to Alpine pastures such as the Pfandleralm, historically linked to Tyrolean freedom fighter Andreas Hofer. The surrounding hamlets—Saltaus, Quellenhof, Christl, Matatz, Kalmtal, and Flon—offer direct access to panoramic trails and cableways.

Local culture thrives in the Schildhof farms, aristocratic estates dating back to the 13th century, and in the MuseumPasseier, located in Hofer’s birthplace, the Sandwirt farm. In winter, St. Martin is ideally positioned to reach the ski areas of Plan and Ratschings-Jaufen, perfect for alpine skiing, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and ice skating.
