Discovering Freienfeld

Campo di Trens is a picturesque village in South Tyrol, located just a few kilometers south of Vipiteno, along the historic Brennero road. The municipality includes the villages of Maria Trens, Stilves, and Mules, as well as several small hamlets nestled in unspoiled nature.

Founded in 1928 through the merger of Stilves and Trens, it is one of the youngest municipalities in South Tyrol. The village stretches along the eastern slope of the Giovo di Trens, reaching the main road that connects Vipiteno to Bressanone.

The area is rich in history, with several castles, including the impressive Castel Tasso, open to visitors and located near a natural climbing wall. Opposite it stands Castel Pietra, visible from the outside, while Castel Gulfo (Welfenstein) is privately owned.

Among the main attractions is the Sanctuary of Maria Trens, an important pilgrimage site, along with the Church of San Osvaldo, dating back to 1329, and the parish church of San Pietro Apostolo in Stilves.

In summer, Campo di Trens is a paradise for hiking and nature lovers, with panoramic trails for families and more demanding routes for experienced hikers. The emerald-green Lake Pontelletto, reflecting the rugged slopes of the Montaccio di Pennes, is one of the most beautiful alpine lakes in the Isarco Valley.

For those seeking adventure, rafting on the Isarco River offers adrenaline-filled experiences. The village is also crossed by the Brennero-Bolzano cycle path, part of the famous Munich-Venice bike route.

In winter, you’ll find ice skating rinks, sledding runs, snowshoe trails, and opportunities for ski touring. The Monte Cavallo – Vipiteno ski area is just minutes away, and cross-country skiing is possible in nearby Val di Vizze.
