Discovering Passo di Fundres

Passo di Fundres (2,568 m a.s.l.), located in the heart of the Fundres Mountains, a subrange of the Zillertal Alps, is one of the most authentic and untouched alpine passes in South Tyrol. This pass connects the Val di Vizze with the Val di Fundres, offering a hiking experience immersed in pristine nature, far from tourist crowds.

The pass can be reached via trail 17A, an old military route that starts from Fossa Trues and crosses the Monte Grande valley, passing by the unmanaged Droßberg Alm. The route, approximately 16 km long, is demanding but rewards hikers with spectacular views of alpine ridges and surrounding valleys.

Among the most popular destinations are the Lago Ponte di Ghiaccio (Eisbruggsee), the Rifugio Ponte di Ghiaccio (Eisbruggjochhütte), and the ascent to Punta Bianca (Wilde Kreuzspitze, 3,371 m), reserved for experienced mountaineers. The area is also traversed by the renowned Pfunderer Höhenweg (Fundres High Route), a 4–6-day trek stretching 71 km from Vipiteno (Sterzing) to Falzes, along panoramic ridges and alpine huts.

For those seeking gentler experiences, the Pfunderer Höfeweg (Farm Trail) is a themed 7 km route through historic alpine farms, with stops dedicated to local crafts, cheese production, aromatic herbs, and traditional practices.

In winter, the region is ideal for ski touring and snowshoeing. Nearby ski areas such as Gitschberg Jochtal and Plose are easily accessible for those wishing to combine nature and sport.
