Discovering Merbjoch

The Passo di Merbe (German: Merbjoch) is a stunning mountain pass located above Predoi (Prettau), in the northernmost part of the Ahrntal Valley (Valle Aurina), South Tyrol, just a few kilometers from the Austrian border. At 2,667 meters above sea level, it offers breathtaking views of the Rieserferner Group, the Venediger Group, and the surrounding peaks of Eastern Tyrol.

Accessible only on foot via high-altitude hiking trails, the pass is a favorite destination for experienced hikers and alpine trekking enthusiasts. The trail from Predoi winds through alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and traditional mountain huts, providing an authentic encounter with the wild nature of the Aurina Alps. In summer, marmots and chamois are frequently spotted, and the meadows are filled with blooming rhododendrons.

The Merbjoch also has historical significance, as it was once used by shepherds and merchants crossing the mountains with their goods. Today, it is a place of peace and contemplation, ideal for those seeking tranquility and pristine alpine scenery.

The most common starting point for the hike is Predoi, the last village in the Aurina Valley, known for its mine museum and the clean air that makes the village famous for its climatic gallery.
