Discovering Klammljoch

Klammljoch, also known as Passo della Gola, is a high mountain pass located at an elevation of 2,288 meters in the heart of the Rieserferner Group, straddling the border between South Tyrol and East Tyrol. This enchanting crossing links Rein in Taufers with St. Jakob in Defereggen, winding through the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park—one of the most pristine areas in the Dolomites. A top destination for hikers, cyclists and nature lovers, Klammljoch offers breathtaking views, alpine lakes such as Klammlsee, and an extraordinary biodiversity, featuring marmots, chamois, and birds of prey.

In summer, the pass is part of routes such as the Rieserferner High Trail and demanding MTB itineraries starting from Campo Tures, Anterselva, and the Aurina Valley. Highlights along the way include Knuttenalm, Arvental Alm, and the historic Jagdhausalm—one of Austria’s oldest alpine farms, composed of 15 stone buildings and a small chapel.

In winter, Klammljoch transforms into a paradise for snowshoeing and ski mountaineering, with trails meandering through silent valleys and snow-covered forests. The Oberhauser Zirbenwald nature trail, complete with educational panels on alpine flora and fauna, adds a rich cultural and environmental layer to the experience.

Accessible only by foot or bicycle, Klammljoch is a slow travel destination for those seeking authenticity, tranquility, and a deep connection with the mountains.
