Discovering Gamsstallscharte

The Gamsstallscharte, also known as the Chamois Saddle, is a dramatic rocky pass located at 2,590 meters in the Latemar Mountain group, straddling the provinces of South Tyrol (Bolzano) and Trentino. Nestled among jagged towers and vertical walls, this alpine saddle is a coveted destination for experienced hikers and lovers of untouched mountain landscapes.

The most popular route begins at the top station of the Oberholz chairlift (2,096 m) above Obereggen, following trail no. 18 through scree fields and lunar-like terrain. Though challenging, the path is well-marked and offers breathtaking views of the Rosengarten (Catinaccio), Weißhorn (Corno Bianco) and Schwarzhorn (Corno Nero).

The Gamsstallscharte is a key junction for circular hikes that include the iconic Torre di Pisa Hut (2,671 m) and the Campanili Saddle, offering a full immersion into the Dolomites’ raw beauty, alpine silence, and encounters with wildlife such as chamois, marmots, and golden eagles.

This area is part of the Latemarium experience—a network of themed trails that combine nature, geology, and alpine culture. Educational panels along the way tell the story of the Latemar’s geological origins and local traditions, making the hike both scenic and informative.
