Discovering Pfaffenscharte

Pfaffenscharte, located at approximately 2,660 meters above sea level, is a spectacular mountain pass between the Ahrntal and the Zillertal, nestled in the heart of the Zillertaler Alpen. This alpine crossing, accessible from Kasern, offers one of South Tyrol’s most panoramic and wild hiking experiences, immersed in the untouched landscapes of the Naturpark Rieserferner-Ahrn.

The trail to Pfaffenscharte is demanding and suited for experienced hikers, with steep sections and breathtaking views of peaks such as Großer Löffler, Schwarzenstein, and Hochgall. The route winds through alpine meadows, glacial streams, and historic mountain huts, often included in longer treks like the Neves Höhenweg or as a stage toward the Rifugio Brigata Tridentina, one of the most scenic shelters in the region.

The Ahrntal is renowned for its authenticity and deep-rooted mining and farming traditions. Beyond hiking, visitors can explore the Mineralienmuseum Kirchler in St. Johann, the Klimastollen Prettau, and the famous Reinbachfälle near Sand in Taufers. Numerous alpine huts offer traditional South Tyrolean cuisine and warm hospitality, making every excursion a full experience of nature and culture.
