Discovering Waidbruck

Ponte Gardena, known in German as Waidbruck, is a picturesque municipality in the Isarco Valley, South Tyrol, that stands out for its strategic location at the gateway to Val Gardena and its rich historical heritage. Situated at approximately 470 meters above sea level, it’s an ideal starting point for exploring the Dolomites of South Tyrol, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The undisputed symbol of the village is the majestic Trostburg Castle, one of the most impressive medieval complexes in South Tyrol. Built in the 12th century and expanded over the centuries, it was the residence of the noble Wolkenstein-Trostburg family for more than 600 years. The poet Oswald von Wolkenstein spent his childhood here. Today, the castle houses the South Tyrolean Castle Museum, featuring 86 scale models that illustrate the evolution of fortified architecture in the region. Highlights include the Gothic Stube, the Knights’ Hall, the frescoed chapel, and the largest wine press in South Tyrol.

The castle is accessible only on foot from Ponte Gardena, via two scenic forest trails. Guided tours are available from Easter to the end of October and last approximately 40–50 minutes.

Thanks to its proximity to Chiusa, Ortisei, and the Puez-Odle Nature Park, Ponte Gardena is perfect for hiking, cycling tours, and cultural stays.
