Discovering Gaisscharte

Located at approximately 2,750 meters above sea level in the Zillertal Alps, the Gaisscharte – Goat Pass is one of the most spectacular crossings along the renowned Pfunderer Höhenweg, a high-altitude hiking trail connecting the Hochfeilerhütte and the Edelrauthütte. This narrow rocky saddle, equipped with metal chains and iron steps, features a thrilling 30-meter vertical descent, ideal for experienced hikers seeking adventure and panoramic views.

The Gaisscharte is immersed in a pristine alpine environment, offering breathtaking vistas of surrounding peaks such as the Hoher Weißzint and Hochfeiler, as well as glimpses of glaciers, alpine lakes, and untouched valleys. Along the trail, hikers may encounter ibexes, golden eagles, and a rich variety of high-mountain flora thriving among alpine meadows and glacial scree.

Culturally, the area is deeply rooted in Ladin and Tyrolean traditions, reflected in the stone-and-wood mountain huts, local cuisine, and stories passed down by valley dwellers. Mountain huts along the route, such as the Edelrauthütte and Hochfeilerhütte, offer authentic hospitality, traditional dishes like canederli, speck, and alpine cheeses, and serve as essential rest stops for those trekking the Pfunderer Höhenweg.
