Discovering Klausen

Klausen, nestled in the heart of the Eisack Valley, is one of South Tyrol’s most enchanting medieval towns, renowned for its artistic heritage, alpine charm, and culinary traditions such as Törggelen. Known as the “City of Artists”, Klausen inspired painters like Albrecht Dürer and hosted an artist colony between the 19th and 20th centuries. Its historic center, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy, features cobbled alleys, pastel-colored facades, and artisan workshops that reflect centuries of history. Highlights include Oberstadt, Tinne Square, the St. Andrew’s Bridge, and the Church of the Apostles, which houses Gothic and Baroque masterpieces.

Towering above the town is the Monastery of Säben, perched on a rocky hill and accessible via a scenic walk. Considered one of the oldest spiritual sites in Tyrol, it offers panoramic views of the valley and a serene atmosphere. The Klausen Municipal Museum, located in the former Capuchin monastery, preserves the precious Loreto Treasure and a rich collection dedicated to the local artist colony.

Klausen is also a gateway to unforgettable hikes: the Chestnut Trail connecting Klausen to Feldthurns, the Villanderer Alm, Latzfonser Alm, and Velthurner Alm offer alpine landscapes, traditional farmsteads, and sweeping views of the Dolomites.

In autumn, Klausen comes alive with the Törggelen Festival, celebrating new wine and roasted chestnuts with open-air taverns, folk music, and traditional dishes.
