Discovering Schartl

Schartl is a mountain pass located at approximately 2,160 meters above sea level, nestled in the wild landscape of the Rieserferner-Ahrn Nature Park in South Tyrol. Remote and authentic, it’s an ideal destination for experienced hikers seeking silence, untouched nature, and breathtaking views.


The pass connects the area of Uttenheim with the upper valley of Riva di Tures, offering access to scenic hiking trails. From here, visitors can admire the majestic peaks of the Rieserferner Group, such as Magerstein, Schwarze Wand, and Großer Moosstock, all rising above 3,000 meters. Trails crossing Schartl wind through scree slopes, alpine lakes, and rocky ridges, providing an immersive experience far from crowded routes.


In summer, Schartl is perfect for panoramic trekking, nature photography, and wildlife observation, while in winter it becomes a starting point for ski touring and snowshoeing in quiet, snowy landscapes. The pass is also part of the renowned Rieserferner cross-border circuit, a multi-day route linking mountain huts and spectacular scenery between Italy and Austria.


Alpine culture thrives in the nearby villages, where Tyrolean architecture, traditional festivals, and local cuisine offer a warm and authentic welcome.
