Discovering Penserjoch

Penser Joch (Passo di Pennes), located at 2,211 meters above sea level, is one of the most spectacular alpine passes in South Tyrol. It connects Bolzano with Vipiteno through the wild and scenic beauty of the Sarntal Valley (Val Sarentino), offering breathtaking views and a deep immersion in the alpine landscape.

During the summer season, Penser Joch is highly appreciated by hikers, road cyclists, and motorcyclists, thanks to the SS 508—a panoramic road full of hairpin bends and alpine vistas. The route passes through picturesque villages like Egg and Pens, and offers unforgettable views of high-altitude meadows and Dolomite peaks. One of the most popular hikes leads to Gänsekragen (2,322 m), starting directly from the pass and reaching the small Jochsee (Lake of Passo Pennes), nestled in pristine nature.

The pass also serves as a gateway to the famous Hufeisen Tour, a circular trekking route that crosses the ridges of the Sarntal Alps, ideal for multi-day hikes between mountain huts and alpine pastures. In autumn, the landscape transforms with vibrant colors, while in winter the road is closed to traffic, preserving the silence and beauty of the snowy surroundings.

Every September, the Penser Joch Bike Day celebrates sustainable mobility by closing the SS 508 to motor vehicles and dedicating it entirely to cyclists. At the summit, a traditional alpine inn offers the chance to enjoy South Tyrolean cuisine and spend the night surrounded by nature.
