Discovering Krinnersattel

Krinnersattel, located at 1,287 meters above sea level in the municipality of San Lorenzo di Sebato (St. Lorenzen), is a little-known yet charming alpine pass connecting the hamlets of Palù and Onach in the lush Val Pusteria (Pustertal). Surrounded by forests, traditional farms and panoramic trails, it’s the ideal destination for those seeking peaceful hikes away from the usual tourist routes.

The pass is home to historic farms such as the Krinnerhof, a typical South Tyrolean agriturismo offering authentic rural experiences: from milking cows and harvesting herbs to tasting homemade jams, syrups and infusions. The area is perfect for hiking, snowshoeing and mountain biking, with stunning views of the Pfunderer Mountains (Fundres Alps) and the Brunico (Bruneck) basin.

Just a few kilometers away lie important cultural sites: Michelsburg Castle, dating back to 1165 and linked to the history of the Anabaptists; Sonnenburg Castle, a former Benedictine monastery now a boutique hotel, featuring medieval frescoes and a herbal garden inspired by Hildegard von Bingen; and the pilgrimage church of Maria Saalen, a centuries-old sanctuary where the Black Madonna is venerated, immersed in an atmosphere of peace and devotion.

Krinnersattel is also a starting point for the Anton Schwingshackl Trail, a challenging yet scenic hike, and for the Pilgrimage Path to Maria Saalen, a meditative route blending nature and faith.
