Discovering Canale d'Agordo

Canale d’Agordo is a charming municipality in the province of Belluno, located in the beautiful Valle del Biois, at the gateway to the Valle di Gares, in the heart of the Belluno Dolomites. It is part of the Agordino area and includes the hamlets of Gares and Carfon. The village is framed by majestic peaks such as the Civetta, the Pelmo, the Pale di San Martino, the Cime d’Auta, and the Marmolada, making it an ideal destination for mountain and nature lovers.

The village preserves the authenticity of an old alpine village, with narrow cobblestone streets, traditional tabià (wooden haylofts), ancient fountains, and houses decorated with sacred frescoes. The monumental fountain in the main square, designed by architect Giuseppe Segusini, is one of the most recognizable symbols of the village.

Canale d’Agordo is also known for its connection to Pope John Paul I, born here as Albino Luciani. The Albino Luciani Museum – MusAL, located in Piazza Papa Luciani next to the Archpriest Church of San Giovanni Battista, celebrates his figure and offers a unique cultural itinerary that also includes his birthplace and other historical sites.

For nature and trekking enthusiasts, the village is a starting point for hikes in the Valle di Gares, where you can find the Alpine Biotope, the Comelle Waterfall, and picnic areas immersed in greenery. More challenging routes lead to spectacular places such as Forcella Stia and the Orrido delle Comelle.

In winter, Canale d’Agordo becomes a paradise for cross-country skiing lovers thanks to the Franco Manfroi trail in Gares, while nearby are the ski resorts of Falcade and the Alpe Lusia – San Pellegrino ski area, part of the famous Dolomiti Superski.
