Discovering Forcella Giaon

The Forcella Giaon is a charming mountain pass located in the Valle Agordina, in the heart of the Belluno Dolomites, at about 1,643 meters above sea level. It is a place that combines history, nature, and breathtaking views — perfect for those who love peaceful walks, trekking, and excursions in an authentic, uncrowded environment.

The name “Giaon” comes from the local word for “scree,” recalling the morphology of the area: rocky slopes and forests alternating with wide grassy clearings and unique views of the surrounding peaks. The pass is easily accessible via trails starting from the villages of the Valle Agordina and serves as a crossing point between valleys, offering both easy hikes and more demanding routes leading to higher altitudes.

Along the way to the Forcella Giaon, hikers pass through beech and fir woods, home to deer, roe deer, and many alpine bird species. In spring and summer, meadows burst into bloom with gentians, rhododendrons, and Turk’s cap lilies, making it a paradise for nature photography.

Besides its natural beauty, the area also has a historical value: during the First World War, the pass was a route used by soldiers and carriers, and traces of that past can still be found.

Visiting the Forcella Giaon means enjoying fresh Dolomite air and discovering an authentic corner of the Valle Agordina, where nature, history, and silence create an unforgettable experience
