Discovering Forcella d'Ambata

In the most remote heart of the Belluno Dolomites, Forcella d’Ambata is located at an altitude of approximately 2,570 meters. This mountain pass connects the basin of Roane, above Auronzo di Cadore, with the slopes of Cima d’Ambata, a rugged and rarely climbed peak that reaches 2,872 meters.

The access route begins in the locality of Roane and follows an unmarked trail, recognizable thanks to red waymarks and faint traces across scree terrain. After crossing rocky slopes, snowfields, and grassy inclines, hikers reach the Carlo Gera bivouac (2,240 m), a strategic support point for experienced mountaineers. From here, the ascent to the pass unfolds through a harsh and spectacular alpine environment, dominated by crumbly rock, steep walls, and breathtaking views of Croda di Ligonto, Punta Anna, and the valleys of Comelico.

The area features no via ferratas or equipped mountain huts and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers. The final stretches toward the summit require mountaineering skills, with sections of grade I and II on unstable rock and no possibility of securing protection. For this reason, Forcella d’Ambata is an ideal destination for those seeking solitude, technical challenge, and a deep connection with the mountains.

Set within a geologically and scenically valuable landscape, this pass offers one of the most authentic experiences in the Dolomites of Auronzo, where time seems to stand still and nature reigns supreme.
