Discovering Ghirlo Lake

Ghirlo Lake, also known as Cencenighe Lake, is a small artificial basin nestled among the mountains of the Agordino region, in the province of Belluno. Located at about 750 meters above sea level, the lake was created by damming the Cordevole stream just after its confluence with the Biois stream, near the hamlet of Ghirlo in Cencenighe Agordino.

The lake’s calm waters and lush vegetation offer ideal settings for nature photography and peaceful moments immersed in greenery. Easily accessible from the village center, it makes for a charming stop along hiking routes that cross the Cordevole Valley.

The dam that formed the lake, designed by engineer Carlo Semenza and completed in 1939, is a fine example of 20th-century hydraulic engineering. With a mixed structure of concrete and earth, it stands 24.45 meters high and has a usable storage capacity of 110,000 m³. This historic element adds cultural value to the site and appeals to enthusiasts of industrial architecture.

Lake Ghirlo also serves as a starting point for excursions into the Agordino Dolomites, with trails that wind through forests, streams, and breathtaking views. In summer, it’s ideal for walks, picnics, and wildlife observation; in autumn, the foliage paints the landscape with warm tones.
