Discovering Mel

Mel, a charming village in the municipality of Borgo Valbelluna (Belluno), is officially one of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy and proudly holds the Orange Flag from the Touring Club. Perched on a panoramic hill overlooking the Valbelluna, Mel is an ideal destination for those seeking art, history, and nature in the heart of the Belluno Dolomites.

Its historic center features elegant Renaissance buildings such as the Palazzo delle Contesse, home to the Archaeological Museum of Mel, which showcases finds from a Paleo-Venetian necropolis and Roman and medieval artifacts. Highlights include the Archpriest Church of Santa Maria Annunziata, Palazzo Fulcis Guarnieri Da Cal, Casa Francescon, and the 17th-century Casa Zadra, leading to the historic Locanda Cappello, listed among Italy’s Historic Inns.

Nature lovers will enjoy the Grotta Azzurra, a turquoise cave nestled in the rocks, and the Giazera, an ancient village icehouse. Just outside town stands the majestic Zumelle Castle, dating back to Roman times and rebuilt in the Middle Ages, now open to visitors with themed rooms, a tavern, and a museum.

Mel is crossed by the ancient Via Claudia Augusta Altinate, a Roman road that once linked the Adriatic to the Danube, now a scenic route for hiking and biking.

In autumn, the village comes alive with Mele a Mel, the largest market fair in Belluno province, celebrating local apple varieties, crafts, and traditions.
