Discovering Erto

Erto (PN), in the Municipality of Erto and Casso, is an authentic village in the Friulian Dolomites, built of stone and wood and surrounded by Alpine silence, set within the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park. Here, pristine nature takes centre stage: wild landscapes, towering peaks, and untouched valleys form part of the Dolomite system recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making the area a reference point for those seeking unique hikes and scenery in the Eastern Alps.

The memory of the Vajont tragedy is deeply woven into the identity of the place. In town, you can visit the Erto and Casso Visitor Centre, one of the most comprehensive documentation centres on the Vajont disaster, with exhibitions such as “Vajont: Images and Memories” and “The Vajont Catastrophe – A Space of Memory”. Photographs, panels, and multimedia materials recount the story before and after 9 October 1963. At the Vajont Dam, an information point is open, and guided tours of the crest are available during operating periods.

For outdoor lovers, Erto is an ideal base among historic and panoramic trails: from the Troi del Sciarbon (Charcoal Path), connecting Erto to Casso and descending toward the dam, to the CAI 380/381 routes crossing scree slopes and forests with views of Mount Toc and the Vajont Valley. In season, the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park offers guided hikes in the Zemola Valley and along themed trails dedicated to the Vajont.
