Discovering Maniago

Maniago, at the heart of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, stands between the Magredi hills and the Colvera stream, with a documented history stretching back to 981 AD, when Otto II confirmed its court to the Patriarchate of Aquileia.

This town has been world-renowned as a cutlery center since 1453, when Nicolò di Maniago secured permission to divert watercourses to power the first trip hammers.

At the centre of Maniago is the Museo dell’Arte Fabbrile e delle Coltellerie (Museum of Forging and Cutlery Arts), housed in the former 1907 factory: over two thousand exhibits showcase the traditional techniques and hydraulic machinery that made local blacksmiths prosperous.

The 15th-century Piazza Italia, dominated by the Duomo di San Mauro Martire in Friulian Gothic style, forms the town’s vibrant core. A short distance away, the Palazzo D’Attimis Maniago surprises visitors with the Lion of Saint Mark fresco by Pomponio Amalteo, while the ruins of the Castello di Maniago, perched on a hill, offer a stunning vantage point over the Carnic Prealps.

Outdoor enthusiasts can choose from hiking and mountain-biking routes that wind through conifer forests and the Magredi badlands. In autumn, the gastronomic tradition is celebrated with Pitina and local cheeses, while in July Maniago hosts Coltello in Festa, an event dedicated to craftsmanship and innovation, and in August the Maniago in Cucina showcase features showcooking and tastings.
