Discovering Suola Pass

Suola Pass (1,994 m a.s.l.) is one of the hidden gems of the Friulian Dolomites Natural Park, a protected wilderness area considered among the most pristine in Europe. Located above the Flaiban Pacherini Mountain Hut, the pass connects the rugged Rovadia Valley with the gentler and more panoramic Suola Valley, offering a deeply immersive experience in high-altitude nature.

The classic hiking route begins in Forni di Sopra, from the hamlet of Cella, and follows CAI Trail 362, which climbs through the Suola Valley amid scree slopes, alpine forests, and glacial streams. The trail is of moderate difficulty, with a total elevation gain of 1,128 m and a round-trip length of about 14 km. From the hut, hikers can reach the pass via a steep direct path or a gentler panoramic variant, both well-marked. At the top, views open onto the jagged peaks of the Monfalconi di Forni Group, with frequent sightings of ibex, marmots, and golden eagles.

In winter, Suola Pass becomes a destination for ski mountaineering, offering challenging but technically accessible ascents for those seeking untouched snowfields far from groomed slopes. Due to avalanche risk, proper equipment and expert guidance are essential.

Culturally, the Suola Valley preserves traces of ancient alpine pastoralism and a strong mountain identity. The silence, lack of infrastructure, and dramatic landscapes make it ideal for slow tourism, nature photography, and environmental education.
