Discovering Cengia Lake
Cengia Lake, located at over 2,300 meters above sea level in the heart of the Sesto Dolomites, is one of the most authentic and captivating alpine lakes in the region. Nestled near the Pian di Cengia Hut, the lake is accessible via panoramic trails that traverse spectacular landscapes made of rocky spires, glacial valleys, and historical traces from World War I.
The route to Cengia Lake begins at the Auronzo Hut, passing through the Lavaredo and Locatelli huts before reaching the Pian di Cengia saddle. Well-marked and surrounded by wild, silent nature, the trail offers breathtaking views of the Tre Cime di Lavaredo, Croda dei Toni, and the peaks of the Sesto Sundial. Along the way, visitors encounter remnants of trenches and military outposts, telling the story of the Dolomitic front.
In summer, the lake is framed by alpine blooms and frequented by marmots and chamois, while in autumn, the landscape glows with intense, warm colors. Fed by melting snowfields, its waters reflect the surrounding peaks, creating a perfect setting for moments of contemplation and nature photography.
The Pian di Cengia Hut, the highest in the Sesto Dolomites, offers homemade meals and an unbeatable view of the mountains. It’s also a starting point for excursions to Mount Paterno, Fiscalino Pass, and the De Toni bivouac.
