Discovering Riepenscharte

Riepenscharte, or Forcella Riepen, is one of the most captivating alpine passes in the Sesto Dolomites, nestled in the heart of the Tre Cime Nature Park, a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site. It lies between Monte Riepen and the Popera Group.

Riepenscharte is traversed by historic trails such as the Strada degli Alpini, which preserves traces of World War I, including trenches and observation posts. The area is distinguished by its rich alpine biodiversity, featuring rare blooms of edelweiss, dwarf rhododendron, and alpine poppy, and is inhabited by chamois, golden eagles, and even the European otter, which has recently returned to South Tyrol’s rivers. The region is part of the Biodiversity Monitoring South Tyrol program, dedicated to analyzing the ecological balance of mountain habitats.

Accessible from Sesto Pusteria and Moso, Riepenscharte is a prime destination for slow tourism, blending natural authenticity with historical memory. Visitors can deepen their connection with the territory through the Rudolf Stolz Museum and the Tre Cime Visitor Center in Dobbiaco, both devoted to alpine art, regional geology, and the history of the Dolomite frontline. The living presence of Ladin culture, with its linguistic and artisanal heritage, further enriches the area’s identity.

A place of profound silence and striking scenery, ideal for those seeking a deep connection with the mountains, where history, biodiversity, and tradition merge.
